Firefox 3.1 (Shiretoko) to be named Firefox 3.5

In a recent announcement, Mozilla announced that Firefox 3.1 (Shiretoko) is to be renamed Firefox 3.5. The announcement followed a proposal which listed the reason as “due to the sheer volume of work which makes Shiretoko feel like much more than a small, incremental improvement over Firefox 3″.

The new features in it will be “TraceMonkey, <video> tag and player support, improvements to user controls over data privacy, significant improvements in the web layout and rendering platform, and much more”.

The release, which is currently versioned as 3.1b3 is expected to be finally released in a few months.

The word “Shiretoko” is an Ainu word meaning “end of the earth” – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiretoko_National_Park.
