The current version of Selenium IDE (1.0.2) is ‘incompatible’ with Firefox 3.6 betas, as shown below.

There is a workaround or trick that you can use to get round this.

Warning!

It involves editing the configuration and settings of your Firefox browser, so be careful – you have been warned.

Step 1

In the address bar of Firefox, enter about:config

You will then be show a list of current settings and configuration.

Step 2

You will need to add a new Preference, called extensions.checkCompatibility.3.6b, which is done by right clicking on the list of preferences and selecting New then Boolean.

Enter the new preference (extensions.checkCompatibility.3.6b) then click OK.

You will now asked to choose a value – select false (to disable checking).

If you want to re-enable checking, you can simply use the Toggle feature (as shown on the right click context menu above) to switch between false and true.

Note:

Previous to 3.6 Beta 3, the generic property extensions.checkCompatibility was used, however it now uses specific versions 3.6b in this case.

Step 3

You will now need to restart Firefox for the changes to take place.

Step 4

If you view the Add-ons dialog, you will be warned that checking is disabled.

You will now be able to use Selenium IDE with Firefox 3.6

Note:

When an updated version of Selenium IDE is available, you should:

a) download and install the new version

b) re-enable compatibility checking.

The following posting on the Mozilla developer news (https://developer.mozilla.org/devnews/index.php/2009/10/30/firefox-3-6-beta-1-is-now-available-for-download/) announces 3.6 beta 1 of Firefox:

The Mozilla community is proud to release Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 for download. This beta version of the next version of Firefox is built on the Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering engine, containing many improvements for web developers, Add-on developers, and users. The Mozilla community appreciates your feedback and assistance in testing this preview of the next version of Firefox. Your beta software will update itself periodically, and eventually will be updated to the final release itself.

This first revision of the Beta of Firefox 3.6 / Gecko 1.9.2 introduces several new features:

Users can now change their browser’s appearance with a single click, with built in support for Personas.

Firefox 3.6 will alert users about out of date plugins to keep them safe.

Open, native video can now be displayed full screen, and supports poster frames.

Support for the WOFF font format.

Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness and startup time.

Support for new CSS, DOM and HTML5 web technologies.

Web developers and Add-on developers should read more detail about the many new features in Firefox 3.6 for developers on the Mozilla Developer Center. For the full list of changes since the alpha release, see this list (it’s big).

Please use the following links to download Firefox 3.6 Beta, or visit the beta download page:

There is a little used but handy Selenium command called Highlight. It as you might have guessed highlights an element on a web page, which when combined with the screen-shot capabilities of Cloud Testing comes into it’s own.

The syntax is:

highlight(locator)

Arguments:

locator – an element locator

Briefly changes the backgroundColor of the specified element yellow. Useful for debugging.

To use this feature within Cloud Testing, just choose the Highlight command, and enter the element or link name e.g. ‘link=Click Me’ for the first argument.

To enable you to view the highlighted area, you will need to add a Capture Screenshot command as the next step in the script, as the highlighting is reset and removed on any page refreshes or reloads.

The area corresponding to the element is highlighted in yellow as can be seen in the following view:

The following shows how you would highlight a text box on the screen.

and a larger view of the highlighted element:

You have been able to export your Cloud Testing scripts in Selenium IDE HTML table format for a long time now. You were also able to import them, which is how you got started in the first place, however after feedback from customers, we have added the ability to either replace an existing script, or append more commands to the end.

On the Edit Script screen, you will find two new links, Export and Import:

For convenience, you can also swap between editing a script and importing, using the links below the navigation area (at the top right of the screen):

Once you have switched to the Import screen, you can choose to either replace all the existing commands, or append the commands found to the end of your existing script.

We’ve had a couple of support calls of how to un-install the Selenium IDE Add-on for Firefox. It is un-installed in exactly the same way as all Add-ons for Firefox, but here are the instructions if you’re still having problems.

1.Go to Add-ons

From within Firefox, choose the Tools menu, then the Add-ons option.

2. Select SeleniumIDE

Scroll down the list of installed Add-ons, until you find Selenium IDE, then click on the un-install button.

You will be asked for confirmation. Select ‘Uninstall’.

3. Restart Firefox

You will now need to restart Firefox to complete the un-install.
